FAQ

Answers to the questions authors ask us most often.

On this page

Quick answers to common questions. Each answer links to the page with more detail.

Do you charge a fee to read or publish my book?

No. We never charge a reading fee, and in a traditional contract we pay all publishing costs. If anyone asks you for money in our name, contact us. See Publishing models.

Do I need a literary agent?

No. We accept submissions directly from authors as well as from agents.

Can I submit by email or post?

No. Please use the online submission form. It makes sure we get everything we need and that your manuscript is stored securely.

What file format should my manuscript be in?

A .docx or PDF file, up to 20 MB, with 12 pt font and 1.5 line spacing. See Manuscript formatting.

Do you accept manuscripts in Bengali or Hindi?

We expect to, alongside English, but this hasn't been confirmed yet. Please email us before submitting. See What we publish.

Can I send an unfinished manuscript?

For fiction and poetry, no: we only consider finished work. For non-fiction, a proposal and two sample chapters are enough.

Can I submit to other publishers at the same time?

Yes. Just let us know straight away if another publisher makes you an offer.

How long will it take to hear back?

We aim to reply within 8 to 12 weeks. See Response times.

Will you give me feedback if you turn my book down?

Usually not. We receive more submissions than we can comment on individually. If an editor has a specific note, they'll include it.

Can I resubmit a book you've turned down?

Only if it has been substantially rewritten, or we invited you to. You're always welcome to send a different manuscript.

I've self-published my book. Can I submit it?

Usually not, unless it sold well and you still hold all the rights. Tell us the sales figures in your cover note.

Who owns the copyright if you publish my book?

You do. You license publishing rights to us for an agreed time, as set out in your contract. The signed contract always takes precedence over anything on this site.

How much will I earn?

Royalties depend on the format and are set out in your contract. See Publishing models for typical ranges.

Is my manuscript safe with you?

Yes. Manuscripts are stored privately and only our editorial staff can open them. See our privacy policy.
